There are about 100,000 hairs on the human head and they last for an average of three years. Every day some 50 to 100 hairs fall out. Male pattern hair loss affects around half of men and is the most common form of hair loss in men. It typically starts with a receding hair line, followed by thinning at the temples and crown. This baldness or alopecia is caused by hair follicles which are over sensitive, resulting in the hair becoming thinner and growing for a shorter period of time. It is linked to the hormone Dihydrotestosterone known as DHT. Too much DHT and hairs fall out quicker. This also occurs in women, known as female pattern baldness.
